Megan Is Missing spent nearly a decade in quiet obscurity before transforming into an unprecedented viral phenomenon. Shot in 2006 over a mere week on an estimated micro-budget of $35,000, director Michael Goi conceived the story as an aggressive cautionary tale about internet predators targeting vulnerable youth. Anchor Bay Films acquired the distribution rights and released it straight to DVD in 2011, where it garnered hostile reviews from critics and vanished from broader conversation.

That dynamic inverted completely in November 2020. A wave of content creators on TikTok began sharing raw reaction videos documenting their shock while watching the movie's harrowing final act. The Independent reported that TikTok users were left traumatized after watching the film for the first time, prompting an exponential surge in web traffic. Within days, millions of younger viewers who had never heard of Goi’s film flooded search engines trying to track down copies. The wave drove the title to the top of Apple's rental charts nine years after its commercial release.

The cast, led by Amber Perkins as Amy Herman and Rachel Quinn as Megan Stewart, suddenly found their early acting reels scrutinized by a new digital generation. The production employed low-resolution webcam recordings, simulated police interviews, and grainy video chats to emulate the unpolished reality of mid-2000s internet communications. That aesthetic choice made the disturbing conclusion feel uncomfortably authentic to viewers accustomed to glossy studio productions.
