All Things Chrome: the Complete Guide to Cookies, Extension Safety, and Privacy Fixes
Modern web standards grant websites extraordinary access to your local hardware. Shady websites use intrusive permission requests to query webcams, audio inputs, background location data, and desktop notification engines. Clicking "Allow" on the wrong prompt results in continuous pop-up scams that clutter your screen even when the offending browser tab is closed.
Lock down Chrome site permissions by visiting Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings. Under the Permissions section, inspect four critical categories:
Set Location, Camera, and Microphone to "Don't allow sites to see your location" or toggle on "Sites can ask for permission" with explicit exclusions. Under Notifications, choose Don't allow sites to send notifications or pick "Use quieter messaging." Disabling intrusive notification banners removes the single most abused vector for browser-level adware distribution.
Review the Background sync and Unsandboxed plugin access settings as well. Revoking background persistence ensures that once you dismiss a website tab, its running processes cannot wake up your network interface or query local resources behind the scenes.
