Is 'A Night in Barcelona' an Official Yuri on Ice Ova? Fact-Checking the Rumor
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
The appetite for bonus stories like a Barcelona side-story grew partly out of a long content drought. After the original anime shattered disc-sales records in 2016, 2017, MAPPA animation studio announced an ambitious theatrical feature: Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence. Intended to explore Victor Nikiforov's younger years in Russia, the production faced repeated internal postponements while the studio took on massive commercial projects like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.
On April 19, 2024, MAPPA issued a formal statement alongside the production committee confirming that Ice Adolescence was officially cancelled. The production committee stated that despite years of effort by the staff, the project could not be brought to completion in a satisfactory manner. This public cancellation effectively eliminated hopes for upcoming canonical anime movies or direct televised follow-ups. With the studio stepping away from the property, no new official spin-off rumors or supplementary OVA projects are currently in production.
