Gerard Butler Streaming Comeback: Today's Netflix Surge and Recent Career Timeline
By Sarah Jenkins
Butler’s current slate extends far beyond conventional law-enforcement shootouts. In early June 2026, IMDb unveiled the striking first-look trailer for In the Hand of Dante, director Julian Schnabel’s ambitious adaptation of Nick Tosches’s sprawling crime novel. The film promptly landed on Netflix on June 24, 2026, pairing Butler alongside Oscar Isaac in what critics quickly labeled an eccentric, uncompromising spectacle.
The project follows a stolen manuscript of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy moving through a black-market syndicate in modern New York and Italy, cut against Dante’s own historical journey in fourteenth-century Sicily. Digital Spy characterized the production as an unapologetically bold creative swing. Isaac stars as Tosches, while Butler anchors the gritty criminal underworld elements that drive the manuscript's illicit journey. It is a rare sight: a bona fide action heavyweight flexing his dramatic range inside an arthouse visual framework, trading blunt weapons for intense psychological confrontations.
