From 'The Entity' to Modern Specials: the Complete Timeline of Cousin Kyle
Kyle Schwartz entered South Park in late 2001 under grim family circumstances. His mother was severely ill in Connecticut, prompting his relatives in Colorado to take him in temporarily. The boys immediately recoiled. Schwartz suffered from severe asthma, chronic sinus blockage, gas, poor circulation, and a debilitating aversion to physical activity. Every sentence arrived coated in thick vocal fry and an unyielding nasal drawl, peppered with compulsive complaints about fluctuating room temperatures and dry air.
The timing of his arrival intersected with one of the series' most famous B-plots: Mr. Garrison's invention of the "IT" personal vehicle. Disgusted by modern airport security, Garrison created a gyro-stabilized, mono-wheeled transport that achieved extraordinary speeds, albeit powered by painfully humiliating bodily controls. While the adult populace flocked to Garrison’s invention, the central four boys spent their days trying to navigate the social disaster of Kyle Schwartz.
The comedy worked because it inverted the show's typical moral layout. Stan Marsh, Kenny McCormick, and particularly Kyle Broflovski were the villains of the domestic plot. They refused to play with him, groaned openly at his medical precautions, and schemed to ship him out of town. Kyle Broflovski, usually positioned as the ethical conscience of the town, became frantic. He feared that Schwartz’s presence validated every stereotype Cartman had ever spewed on the school bus.
