Who Was Eris? Unraveling the True Origin of Discord in Greek Myth
The Judgment of Paris turned an Olympian vanity contest into a geopolitical crisis. Escorted by Hermes, the three goddesses approached the Trojan prince, each attempting to buy his vote. Hera promised him political dominion over Europe and Asia. Athena offered military genius and victory in every campaign. Aphrodite offered him the hand of the most beautiful mortal woman alive: Helen, the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta.
Paris took Aphrodite's offer. He awarded her the golden apple of discord, earning Troy the permanent hatred of both Hera and Athena.
The geopolitical dominoes tumbled rapidly. Paris traveled to Sparta under diplomatic protection, violated the sacred laws of hospitality (xenia), and fled back to Troy with Helen. Menelaus invoked the Oath of Tyndareus, gathering a coalition of Greek city-states to lay siege to the Trojan shoreline. The resulting conflict lasted a decade, killed an entire generation of heroes, and reduced one of the Mediterranean's greatest bronze-age citadels to ashes. Eris never swung a sword at Troy. She simply provided the apple and watched human desire consume an empire.
