Who Is Peter Marc Jacobson? Inside the Life and Career of Fran Drescher’s Ex-Husband
The collaboration between Peter Marc Jacobson and Fran Drescher began at Hillcrest High School in Queens, New York, during the early 1970s. Both were teenage dreamers with aspirations centered on the performing arts. They married in 1978, at just 21 years old, and packed their belongings into a compact car to head west to Los Angeles. Jacobson initially chased acting roles, picking up minor credits in episodic dramas and low-budget features, but his intuitive grasp of comedy structure steered him behind the cameras.
Jacobson spent the 1980s analyzing the mechanics of half-hour network scripts. He recognized that Drescher’s hyper-specific vocal delivery and unapologetic borough sensibilities needed a custom-built vehicle. During a transatlantic flight to Europe, Drescher pitched an idea sparked by her time visiting a friend in London: a working-class woman from Queens finding herself surrounded by British aristocracy. Jacobson immediately saw the commercial utility. Together, they developed the pilot for The Nanny.
When CBS picked up the series in 1993, Jacobson took on the role of showrunner. He calibrated the timing, mapped multi-episode arcs, and balanced the broad physical humor with polished farce. Over the course of 146 episodes, The Nanny drew tens of millions of viewers weekly, earning 12 Emmy nominations and generating lucrative worldwide syndication deals that remain active three decades later.
