Arthuer juggled three cleaning and caretaking jobs simultaneously to keep food on the table. She worked twelve-hour shifts, scrubbing floors in schools, cleaning offices, and caring for elderly residents across Navarre. With their father working abroad in the United Kingdom, eight-year-old Iñaki assumed responsibility for taking little brother Nico to school and football practice.

Football was not viewed as an elite career path; it was cheap neighborhood recreation. The brothers honed their explosive pace on concrete public courts in the Rochapea neighborhood of Pamplona. Arthuer enforced strict household rules. Football boots were only allowed if school grades were maintained, and both boys understood that their mother's daily labor subsidized their training kits.

Athletic Bilbao scouts spotted Iñaki’s raw athletic power first, recruiting him to their famed Lezama youth academy. When Nico followed several years later, the Basque club made a rare historical exception: two brothers of African heritage occupying key attacking positions inside an institution historically committed exclusively to locally developed Basque talent.
