Who Is Ilona Maher? the Viral Dwts Sensation and Rugby Star Breaking the Internet
Before the red-carpet appearances and multimillion-view video clips, Ilona Maher grew up in Burlington, Vermont, immersing herself in field hockey, basketball, and softball. She did not touch a rugby ball until her senior year of high school. The sport immediately matched her raw physical strength and quick processing speed.
She began her collegiate career at Norwich University before transferring to Quinnipiac University, a powerhouse program where she developed into the country's most dangerous collegiate ball-carrier. At Quinnipiac, Maher led the Bobcats to three consecutive National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) titles from 2015 to 2017. In 2017, she received the prestigious MA Sorensen Award, presented annually to the top women’s collegiate rugby player in the United States.
Maher earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Quinnipiac, followed by a master’s degree in business administration from DeVry University. That clinical grounding and business education proved foundational. When she joined the senior national program for USA Women's Rugby, Maher approached her athletic career with both tactical understanding and acute awareness of marketability.
