Which Way Does the Tip Point? Visual Guide to Inserting a Coudé Catheter Correctly
The single most critical mechanical fact in coudé insertion is that the tip must point strictly toward the 12 o'clock position, facing directly upward toward the patient's umbilicus. If you rotate the catheter so the tip points downward toward 6 o'clock, the angled beak digs directly into the floor of the urethra. That mistake drastically spikes resistance, punctures the vascular mucosa, and worsens urinary retention.
Because the shaft hides inside the body during advancement, manufacturers incorporate an indicator stripe or tactile groove running along the external surface. This longitudinal guide tracks the exact orientation of the tip. On most modern brands, including Coloplast, Bard, and Teleflex, a colored line or a raised tab on the drainage funnel points in the exact direction of the curved tip. If the ridge or stripe faces directly toward your face while looking down at your abdomen, the internal tip is pointed safely toward the ceiling of the urethra.
