A standard Trinidad geography map reveals an island that looks less like an isolated speck of sand and more like a puzzle piece sheared off South America. Trinidad occupies the edge of the South American continental shelf. On clear mornings along the southwestern peninsula of Icacos, the green hills of Venezuela loom visibly across the water.

Two main water passages frame the island's interaction with the mainland. To the south, the Columbus Channel splits Trinidad from the Orinoco River delta. To the west, the Gulf of Paria forms a vast, sheltered inland sea hemmed in by Trinidad on the east and mainland Venezuela on the west. The northern exit of this gulf is choked by a cluster of rocky islets known as the Bocas del Dragón (Dragon's Mouths), while the southern entry narrows at the Serpent's Mouth.

Because of this specific placement, Trinidad experiences none of the typical geographic vulnerability seen in the northern Leeward and Windward Islands. It sits safely south of the Atlantic hurricane belt. Major tropical storms routinely bypass the island, curving north toward Barbados, Saint Lucia, and Puerto Rico instead.
