What Does 'Owo' Actually Mean? Internet Slang Explained Amid High-Profile Crime Case
By David Miller
The sequence first surfaced during the early 2000s across platform ecosystems like Gaia Online, deviantART, and IRC chat rooms dedicated to Japanese animation. Users adopted the symbol to mimic stylized animal expressions common in shojo and comedy manga. Over the following decade, the character combination found deep adoption within furry fandom slang, where roleplayers used it to signify an anthropomorphic persona reacting playfully to conversational cues.
Between 2016 and 2018, the term underwent an ironic shift. A viral text copypasta mocking amateur roleplaying, beginning with the infamous phrase "*notices bulge* OwO what's this?", swept 4chan, Reddit, and Tumblr. Instead of expressing genuine cutesy surprise, internet users began deploying the text deliberately to embarrass peers, mock overwrought roleplay styles, or inject surreal awkwardness into dry technical forums. By 2020, the expression was entrenched inside Discord servers and gaming livestreams as shorthand for deadpan mischief.
