Visual Id Guide: How to Tell an Opossum Apart from a True Possum Instantly
By Alexander Ross
Look at the tails to eliminate any remaining doubt. The Virginia opossum drags a long, naked, scaly appendage that looks like a pinkish-gray rat tail. That limb is fully prehensile. Young opossums wrap it around twigs for stability, and adults use it to anchor nesting materials such as leaves and dry twigs while climbing.
Contrary to a stubborn cartoon myth, an adult Virginia opossum cannot hang upside down by its tail while sleeping. The animal's adult body mass strains the tail's muscular capacity, limiting upside-down hanging to brief moments among lightweight juveniles.
The Australian brushtail possum sports a lush, thick tail that earns its common name. The dorsal side stays heavily furred, while the ventral underside features a bare, leathery friction pad at the tip. This grip pad works like an extra hand, locking onto eucalyptus limbs while the animal stretches for gum leaves or slips inside roof cavities. The ringtail possum variations go a step further with tapered, white-tipped prehensile tails that coil into a tight spring for grasping branches.
Both creatures raise their offspring inside an abdominal pouch, but their nursery structures mirror their differing lifespans. A mother Virginia opossum gives birth after a brief 12- to 13-day gestation, sending as many as 20 bee-sized embryos crawling toward 13 nipples arranged in a circle. High infant mortality means only a fraction survive. Australian possums invest heavily in fewer offspring: females typically birth a single joey per cycle, nursing the young marsupial inside the pouch for roughly four to five months before carrying it on their back.
