Timeline of a Trailblazing Mother: Katherine Johnson’s Journey from Motherhood to Nasa Glory
The lessons learned in the Goble household bore long-term fruit. All three daughters attended college, pursuing careers in education, public service, and community work.
The eldest, Constance Goble Garcia, became a teacher and dedicated herself to public education before her passing in 2010. Her work touched hundreds of students in underserved school systems. Joylette Goble Hylick pursued public service, working with government entities and later traveling across the country to share her mother’s legacy with young girls in science. Katherine Goble Moore pursued education and family advocacy, working directly with the Katherine Johnson Foundation to secure college scholarships for minority students pursuing mathematics and aerospace degrees.
When President Barack Obama awarded Katherine Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2015, her daughters sat in the audience. They saw the medal as a recognition of their mother's professional genius, but also of the personal sacrifices she made behind closed doors.
