The Evolution Timeline of the 'Unzips Pants' Meme: from 2020 Reddit Hits to 2024 Resurgence
By Marcus Vance
By early 2024, the meme moved deep into subcultural niches. On January 14, 2024, an influential post on r/grimdark, a Reddit hub dedicated to parodies of tabletop miniature franchises, refitted the trope for sci-fi satire. Instead of an everyday human reacting to a provocative prompt, users redrew the scene featuring Space Marines, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus operatives.
The Warhammer community layered extra irony onto the format. In a fictional universe characterized by bleak warfare, religious fanaticism, and bodily cybernetics, applying a base internet sexual reaction to monstrous aliens or mechanical constructs produced sharp comedic contrast. The post demonstrated how internet subcultures maintain old formats: when an image macro exhausts its mainstream novelty, fandom artists strip its core emotional rhythm and rebuild it inside their own lore.
