The Evolution of Lmfao: from 90S Internet Slang to Global Phenomenon
In 2006, an unlikely musical project appropriated the acronym. Stefan Kendal Gordy and Skyler Austen Gordy, the son and grandson, respectively, of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, formed an electronic dance music outfit in Los Angeles. Initially performing under the moniker "Sexy Dudes," the uncle-and-nephew pairing reconsidered their branding after a skeptical message from Sky Blu's grandmother, who responded to their initial name with the dismissive chat acronym.
Adopting the handle Redfoo and Sky Blu, the duo rebranded their entire project as LMFAO. They transformed underground electro-house into aggressive, accessible arena synth-pop. Their sophomore studio album, Sorry for Party Rocking (2011), spawned the ubiquitous anthem "Party Rock Anthem."
The single held the Billboard Hot 100 number one spot for six consecutive weeks and racked up over 3.4 billion views on YouTube. In 2012, LMFAO landed prominent MTV Movie Awards nods alongside Kid Cudi, cementing the complete transition of a mid-90s IRC acronym into corporate radio dominance.
