A standard 52-card deck without Jokers forms the baseline for Kings in the Corner. Two to four player rules dictate the hand distribution. If two players take seats, each receives 7 cards face-down. In a three or four-player circle, the dealer also distributes 7 cards per person, though traditional variants sometimes reduce hand sizes to 5 cards in larger groups to avoid burning through the deck on opening passes. The deal rotates clockwise after every finished hand.

Once hands are dealt, the dealer sets the remaining cards face-down in the center of the table. This stack becomes the communal stock pile. The dealer draws the top four cards and places them face-up at the cardinal compass points, North, South, East, and West, creating the foundation piles cross layout. These four cards establish the initial playing field.

The empty diagonal gaps between the cross arms, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast, are reserved as corner spaces for Kings. No other card can initiate a diagonal foundation. If the dealer draws a King while laying down the initial cross piles, that King shifts immediately to an adjacent corner space, and a fresh card from the stock pile replaces it in the original cross slot.
