The Complete Snapchat Emoji Directory: Meanings and Customization
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
The symbols flanking names on your chat list are governed by Snapchat's proprietary scoring mechanics. The Best Friends list algorithm scans bidirectional activity, tallying sent snaps, incoming snaps, and rapid two-way exchanges. Group chats do not count toward this tally; the system rewards direct, individual photo and video snaps above text exchanges.
Your top tier can hold up to eight contacts at any given time. Crucially, friend emojis are asymmetrical and completely confidential. A contact can sit at the top of your personal list while you occupy an entirely different ranking on theirs, meaning the emojis appearing on your screen reflect your unique habits rather than an objective public standing.
