'The Chi' Final Season First Look: Zaria Imani Primer's Evolution on Screen
Executive producer Lena Waithe has maintained a deliberate policy throughout the run of The Chi: cast faces that reflect the city's actual texture rather than polished, generic television archetypes. Primer fits that philosophy completely. In roundtable conversations, showrunners have consistently pointed to Primer's naturalistic delivery as an essential component in keeping the show's youth storylines tethered to reality.
"Zaria brings an honesty that cannot be faked in an audition room," Waithe noted in an earlier season retrospective. "You either know that girl from the block, or you don't. She understands the stakes of Lynae's life."
That grounded instinct separated Primer from child-actor mannerisms. In scenes opposite experienced character actors like Yolonda Ross (Jada) and Tyla Abercrumbie (Nina), Primer never pushed for unearned sympathy. If Lynae felt suspicious of an adult, Primer played that suspicion with icy stillness. When Lynae softened, it felt earned after hard-fought narrative battles, offering viewers a masterclass in patient character construction.
