Real or Fake? the Wild Story Behind the Viral Ai Video of Lamine Yamal Bathing Lionel Messi
By Chloe Bennett
Football fandom has always relied on mythology. Decades ago, fans debated whether Alfredo Di Stéfano almost signed for Barcelona or how Diego Maradona mastered his touch with oranges. In 2026, mythmaking happens in video editing apps and generative diffusion models.
The Yamal-Messi meme illustrates how quickly social platforms consume factual history and bend it into digital absurdisms. The original image carries immense emotional weight: an awkward, gentle kid who would conquer the world, holding an infant who would grow up to wear his number. But internet humor resists unearned sentimentality. By converting the photo into a reverse bath clip or an AI lip-sync routine, creators reclaimed the story for Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences.
These synthetic clips work because they depend on an underlying truth. If Messi had never met Yamal, an AI video of them in a bathtub would feel bizarre and irrelevant. The deepfake thrives specifically because the real-world event was so absurdly improbable that parody was the only frontier left to explore.
