Proof That Mr. Kipling Was Real: Behind the Scenes with 'Jessie' Star Frank the Lizard
Reptile wranglers managed Frank with surgical precision. Monitors are ectothermic; their activity levels drop when temperatures cool, while warmth increases their metabolic speed and drive to explore. Wranglers used this biology to their advantage. To keep Frank settled next to Debby Ryan or Peyton List during lengthy dialogue scenes, handlers maintained a controlled baseline temperature that kept the lizard comfortable without inducing sluggish distress or sudden bursts of agility.
Wranglers stationed themselves inches off-camera, constantly monitoring Frank’s tongue-flicking speed, eye posture, and breathing cadence. A relaxed monitor lizard breathes deeply and moves its head slowly. A stressed monitor expands its throat, hisses loudly, and shifts its tail into a defensive posture.
Safety rules for the young cast were absolute. Karan Brar underwent supervised acclimation sessions before shooting began. The young actor learned how to approach Frank from the side, never make erratic movements above the reptile’s eyeline, and avoid handling the animal right after meal sessions. Food on set was restricted. Frank received a controlled diet of rodents, fish, and specialized raw meat off-set to eliminate food-drive aggression in front of the live studio audience.
