Pops in Regular Show Explained: Character Powers, Backstory, and Finale Fate
Pops did not begin his creative life in Regular Show. J.G. Quintel originally conceived the character while studying at CalArts, debuting him in the 2005 animated short The Naive Man from Lolliland. When Quintel pitched Regular Show to Cartoon Network's "Cartoonstitute" incubator program, he brought Pops along as part of the core groundskeeping ensemble.
Within the park, Pops lived under the protection of his wealthy adoptive father, Mr. Maellard, who owned the grounds and constantly berated the park manager, Benson. Pops rarely handled administrative work. Instead, he wandered the property, wrestled butter, cheered on Mordecai and Rigby during mundane chores, and paid for services with butterscotch candies and lollipops. Voice actor Sam Marin gave Pops his warbling, high-pitched voice, balancing Victorian propriety with unrestrained elation through trademark catchphrases like "Good show!" and "Jolly good show!"
His mind was gentle because it was fragile. Early episodes established that Pops suffered from physical vulnerabilities, including fainting spells during stressful moments or heat exhaustion. Nobody suspected that beneath that soft, pastel-colored frame rested a primordial titan waiting to awaken.
