Peggy Gou's Fast-Paced Journey: from Ambitious Youth to Festival Phenomenon
Kim Min-ji was born on July 3, 1991, in Incheon, South Korea. Her childhood reflected typical upper-middle-class expectations: rigorous academic pressure coupled with classical piano lessons that began at age eight. The discipline bored her. She showed an appetite for creative expression that irritated her instructors, preferring contemporary sounds to classical sonatas.
Recognizing their daughter's restlessness, her parents made a dramatic decision in 2005. At age 14, they sent her to London to live with guardians and attend secondary school. Culture shock arrived instantly. Without conversational English fluency, Gou relied on visual cues, personal styling, and MTV Europe music videos to bridge the communication gap. London was a massive sonic shift. The city exposed her to European dance music, indie rock, and an energetic street style that altered her outlook permanently.
Her family eventually called her back to South Korea after school administrators caught her skipping class to wander the capital's retail corridors. Yet the Seoul routine could no longer hold her. By 18, she convinced her family to let her return to the UK, securing admission to study fashion promotion.
