Meet Matte Babel: Inside Shay Mitchell's Low-Key Life with Her Longtime Partner
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Long before American tabloids framed him as Shay Mitchell's elusive partner, Matte Babel built an established broadcasting career in Canada. Born in Toronto, Babel earned a degree in Sociology from Wilfrid Laurier University while playing varsity football. He broke into television through Toronto's vibrant media scene, quickly securing an on-air role as an anchor and correspondent for MuchMusic, the Canadian equivalent of MTV.
Babel leveraged his charismatic screen presence into high-profile broadcast journalism, contributing to Entertainment Tonight Canada and reporting from major global red carpets. Yet behind the camera, his ambitions tilted toward business operations. Babel transitioned into artist management and brand strategy, eventually taking on an executive role within DreamCrew, the entertainment management and production company co-founded by international rap icon Drake. His background gives him rare fluency in the entertainment industry without the constant need for personal camera time.
