Lisa Gilroy's Rapid Rise: from Podcast Favorite to Animated Action Star
By Marcus Vance
Gilroy did not materialize out of thin air on TikTok feeds. Her timing was honed across years of grueling stage work in Edmonton and Toronto before she established a presence in Los Angeles. At The Second City Toronto, she mastered short-form physical commitment and ensemble timing. Those fundamentals proved vital when she entered the unforgiving, unscripted world of long-form comedic podcasting.
Her appearances on Scott Aukerman's Comedy Bang! Bang! redefined what guests could accomplish on the audio platform. While many performers lean on polite conversational riffs, Gilroy arrived with fully realized, aggressively chaotic characters. Personas like Dickie Donnelly, a fast-talking Victorian-era orphan obsessed with physical stunts, and peanut-butter-hoarding sociopaths stopped veteran improvisers in their tracks. Aukerman frequently struggled to keep his composure while Gilroy steered bits into escalating madness. The audio spots quickly generated animated clips and Reddit discussion threads, establishing her as an elite comedic talent before most studio executives had seen her face.
