Laura Kenny (Trott) Career Timeline: from Local Velodrome Prodigy to Global Cycling Legend
Kenny was born a month premature in Harlow, Essex, with a collapsed lung and later received an asthma diagnosis. Doctors encouraged cardiovascular exercise to expand her lung capacity. That medical advice sent an eight-year-old Laura and her sister Emma to the Gosling Park outdoor velodrome in Welwyn Garden City. The concrete track was bumpy, exposed to British weather, and miles removed from the climate-controlled indoor Siberian pine tracks where Olympic finals are contested.
Her talent surfaced fast within British Cycling’s Olympic Development Programme. By 2011, at nineteen, she was drafted into the senior team pursuit squad for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn. Alongside Wendy Houvenaghel and Danielle King, she took gold. When London 2012 arrived, the British public demanded perfection inside the Lee Valley VeloPark. Trott, then just twenty years old, delivered two world records alongside King and Joanna Rowsell in the 3,000-meter team pursuit. Days later, she clawed back points in the final 500-meter time trial to snatch gold in the individual omnium.
