Is the Viral Old Navy Tote Actually Worth It? Quality, Durability, and Honest Flaws
Synthetic materials make or break affordable accessories. Old Navy built this tote from 100% polyurethane, bonded over a polyester backing fabric. Out of the box, the exterior avoids the sticky, chemical sheen that plagues cheap PVC alternatives. It mimics a finely pebbled calfskin with surprising fidelity, offering a soft hand-feel that drapes rather than buckles.
Material thickness measures right around 1.4 millimeters, light enough to keep the unladen bag comfortably featherweight at just under 1.1 pounds. However, lightweight materials carry inherent compromises. When subjected to continuous wear and tear durability testing, the polyurethane lacks the self-healing density of full-grain hide. Scrapes against brick subway stations or metal turnstiles leave noticeable scuffs that cannot be buffed away with leather balm. In colder winter climates dipping below 28°F, the synthetic exterior stiffens noticeably, increasing tension along the top fold lines.
