Is Ilia Malinin Gay? the Viral Comments and Rumors Behind the Skating Star Explained
By Marcus Vance
Search patterns around Malinin's personal life do not just focus on orientation; they also careen into conflicting romantic rumors involving high-profile female teammates. In early 2026, social channels buzzed with claims of an "Ilia Malinin girlfriend," with chatter specifically pinpointing reigning U.S. women's champion Amber Glenn. The speculation forced both skaters to privately brush off the gossip. Their dynamic is purely platonic, two elite athletes enduring the intense pressure of international competition while representing the same national federation. Glenn has publicly discussed her own identity and dating experiences, making the romantic pairing an invention of overactive fandoms.
The rumor mill took an even weirder turn in late February 2026, when a short clip recorded at a post-event banquet surfaced online. The video captured Malinin engaged in a standard, friendly conversation with two-time U.S. national champion and Olympic team medalist Gracie Gold. Within 48 hours, clickbait aggregators and anonymous social accounts spun the seconds-long footage into fabricated claims of illicit dating and backstage drama. The narrative quickly collapsed under scrutiny. Veteran skating commentators and insiders pointed out that competitors at international invitationals share banquets, press areas, and gala dressing rooms as standard practice.
The juxtaposition of these rumors highlights the absurdity of the discourse: Malinin is simultaneously speculated to be quietly gay by one corner of the internet while being falsely accused of dating his female peers by another.
