Is Doja Cat South African? Everything You Need to Know About Her Father, Name, and Heritage
Doja Cat's paternal roots trace directly to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is one of South Africa's most recognizable screen and stage veterans. Born in Durban in 1963, Dlamini made history as part of the original cast of Mbongeni Ngema’s seminal musical Sarafina!. He played the standout role of Crocodile, an energetic schoolboy fighting against apartheid oppression.
When the production transferred from Market Theatre in Johannesburg to Broadway in New York in the late 1980s, Dlamini relocated to the United States. He spent years performing on stage and later reprised his role in the 1992 Hollywood film adaptation alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo. During his stay in the United States, Dlamini met Jewish-American graphic designer and painter Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer.
Their relationship produced two children, including Amala, born on October 21, 1995, in Tarzana, Los Angeles. Shortly after her birth, Dlamini left the United States and returned to South Africa, where he resumed a prolific acting career on prominent local television series like Yizo Yizo, Isibaya, and eHostela. His departure left Sawyer to raise Amala and her brother as a single mother, creating an emotional and geographical divide that never truly healed.
