Internet Slang Update: Why Oomf Is Dominating Social Media Conversations Again
By James H. Sterling
Q1: Does OOMF mean "follower" or "friend"?
A1: The primary definition is "one of my followers." However, within private group chats, close mutual networks, and TikTok videos, many users swap "follower" for "friend" without changing the acronym's underlying purpose.
Q2: Is referring to someone as OOMF an insult?
A2: Context dictates meaning. Between 2011 and 2015, the term frequently signaled passive-aggressive criticism. In modern usage, it is overwhelmingly affectionate or flirtatious, commonly referencing mutual crushes or tight-knit internet friends.
Q3: What does the term "oomfies" mean on social platforms?
A3: "Oomfies" is a plural, cutesy variation of the term. It refers to a user's trusted circle of mutual followers on platforms like X and TikTok, serving as digital shorthand for "my close online friends."
