Inside the Private World of Danny Jones Penniman: the Untold Story of Little Richard's Son
Little Richard met Ernestine Campbell (née Harvin), a secretary from Washington, D.C., at an evangelical rally in October 1957. The singer was in the middle of renouncing secular rock and roll, having walked away from fame to enroll at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, to pursue Seventh-day Adventist ministry. The couple married on July 11, 1959, bonding over gospel devotion and shared religious commitments.
The couple adopted Danny in 1962. Born around 1958, the boy came from an impoverished church associate's family in California, and Richard and Ernestine stepped in to offer legal guardianship and stable care. Although the couple divorced in 1964 due to the pressures of Richard's grueling return to secular touring and his volatile personal conflicts, their paternal bond did not fracture. Little Richard retained legal and emotional custody of Danny, raising him as his own child while shielding him from the harshest edges of the music industry.
