Inside the Henderson Sphynx Cat Raid: Why 21 Felines Were Seized from Breeder
Sphynx cats are not simply regular house cats without fur. They have a specialized metabolism that burns calories rapidly to maintain a core body temperature roughly four degrees higher than coated cats. Without protective hair, their exposed skin is vulnerable to secondary bacterial infections, severe sunburn, and rapid hypothermia if ambient room temperatures drop below 70°F (21°C).
When an unlicensed cat breeding setup forces these animals into crowded, unsanitary spaces, airborne pathogens spread fast. Feline calicivirus, herpesvirus, and mycoplasma ravage young litters within 48 hours. The five kittens that died following the seizure presented with advanced upper respiratory consolidation, severe dehydration, and secondary skin infections. Without immediate veterinary intervention, routine kitten illnesses turn fatal. In back-room operations focused entirely on cash sales, preventive vaccines and regular checkups are often skipped to maximize profits.
