Inside Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area: Scenic Views, Hidden Trails, and Raw Wilderness
Mountain bikers throughout the Midwest regard the Pontiac Lake mountain bike trail as a benchmark endurance circuit. Maintained in close partnership with the Clinton River Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association (CMMBA), the trail covers approximately 11 miles of unrelenting, hand-built singletrack.
Unlike modern machine-sculpted flow trails built around tabletop jumps and sweeping berms, Pontiac Lake retains old-school ruggedness. Riders encounter off-camber root systems, exposed limestone outcrops, tight tree gates, and grinding, loose-rock climbs that demand constant pedaling cadence. The trail’s signature descent, known among regulars as the "Drop," drops precipitously down a glacial ridge, demanding decisive line choice and committed braking control.
The entire circuit is strictly directional by day of the week to eliminate blind collisions. While novice riders can access bypass lanes around severe drop-offs, the route remains firmly rated for intermediate to expert riders. A standard lap demands anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes of sustained cardiovascular output, making it a regular testing ground for regional cross-country endurance racers.
