How Many Presidents Have We Had in America? the Ultimate Guide and Faq
By James H. Sterling
Q1: Why is Donald Trump counted as both the 45th and 47th President?
A1: Official White House and National Archives protocol counts each non-consecutive four-year election cycle as a separate presidency. Because Trump lost the 2020 election and reclaimed the office in 2024, his administrations sit on either side of Joe Biden's 46th presidency.
Q2: Has any president served without being elected?
A2: Yes. Gerald Ford became Vice President through the 25th Amendment following Spiro Agnew's resignation, then ascended to the presidency when Richard Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974. Ford ran for a full term in 1976 but lost to Jimmy Carter.
Q3: How many presidents have been assassinated while in office?
A3: Four presidents have died by assassination: Abraham Lincoln (1865), James A. Garfield (1881), William McKinley (1901), and John F. Kennedy (1963).
Q4: Who was the youngest person to assume the presidency?
A4: Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest president in history, taking office at age 42 years and 322 days following William McKinley's death in September 1901. John F. Kennedy was the youngest candidate *elected* to the office, taking the oath at age 43 in January 1961.
