From Worm to Medusa: a Complete Timeline of Heidi Klum's Extreme Costumes
The concept for the giant earthworm costume began months before Halloween 2022 with a simple premise: Klum wanted to portray something universally considered unsettling, formless, and absurd. She brought the concept to makeup designer Mike Marino of Prosthetic Renaissance, whose film credits include transformative character work on The Batman and Coming 2 America. Marino initially resisted the pitch, warning Klum that the physical realities of the build would rob her of basic motor functions, arm mobility, and standard temperature regulation.
Klum insisted on moving forward. Marino's team took full-body plaster casts to sculpt a continuous, accordion-ribbed exterior made primarily of flexible foam latex and dense silicone. Each section was hand-painted to replicate the slick, translucent vascularity of an annelid. To complete the narrative context on arrival, her husband, musician Tom Kaulitz, accompanied her dressed as a grizzled, one-eyed fisherman holding a fishing rod attached directly to her suit with high-tension line.
Inside the suit, Klum was tightly strapped into an internal harness that held her arms flush against her torso. She could not break a fall, drink through a cup unassisted, or sit down normally. The design left no room for ventilation systems or emergency cooling fans. Klum later noted that escaping the suit required a utility blade and multiple shop assistants after hours of sweltering under studio lights. The extreme physical containment highlighted an essential truth about her brand: she is willing to endure severe physical discomfort for a memorable, unvarnished visual punchline.
