From the Villa to Capitol Hill: Inside Leah Kateb's Shocking Fight for Farm Animals
By David Miller
In her extensive discussion featured by The Dodo, Kateb pulled no punches regarding the conditions faced by animals raised in intensive factory systems. She focused on the intense confinement of breeding sows kept in gestation crates so narrow that the animals cannot turn around for nearly their entire adult lives. "These animals have no voice, no vote, and no way to defend themselves from laws written behind closed doors," Kateb stated. She stressed that allowing federal legislation to wipe out voters' decisions sets a damaging precedent.
Rather than merely circulating online petitions that frequently gather dust, Kateb broke down the congressional process for her followers. She published straightforward step-by-step guides showing young people how to identify their specific district representatives, dial congressional switchboards, and deliver concise constituent messages. Congressional aides reported noticeable spikes in call volumes from younger demographics demanding the removal of corporate-backed welfare riders from the Farm Bill.
