February to June 2021: Chronological Breakdown of Hyunjin's Stray Kids Hiatus
By Marcus Vance
The timing created an enormous tactical headache for JYP and Mnet. Filming for Kingdom: Legendary War had just kicked off, with introductory stages recorded on February 23, mere hours after the initial rumors surfaced. Hyunjin appeared in that initial broadcast, but his presence was largely excised from subsequent edits.
The remaining seven members, Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N, faced a brutal schedule. They had to restructure complex, acrobatic choreographies originally built around Hyunjin’s physical center presence. Rapping lines and center dance breaks were divided across the lineup under heavy television production timelines.
Instead of faltering, Stray Kids turned the competition into a turning point. Innovative staging concepts, including their mashup of "God's Menu" with BLACKPINK's "DDU-DU DDU-DU," generated millions of YouTube views. When the final live broadcast concluded on June 3, 2021, Stray Kids claimed first place. They secured their domestic position without relying on their primary visual focal point.
