Losing the Cassie Lang role paradoxically benefited Fortson's artistic development. Unshackled from long-term Marvel multi-picture contracts that often restrict young performers to minor supporting arcs, Fortson pursued demanding character work outside the superhero machine.

Her breakthrough came in Kelly Fremon Craig's 2023 adaptation of Judy Blume's iconic novel, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Anchoring the film as Margaret Simon alongside Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, Fortson delivered one of the most widely praised coming-of-age performances of the decade. Film critics praised her vulnerability, comedic restraint, and emotional depth.
