Fact Check: the Truth Behind 'Is Speed Gay' Searches, Viral Memes, and Sports Milestones
By Alexander Ross
A smaller, yet mathematically notable portion of search traffic originates from an entirely straight-laced sports equipment search. In late June 2026, golf equipment outlet GolfWRX published an analysis titled "Brian Gay and the search for power," highlighting the PGA Tour veteran's attempts to maximize his driving distance.
Gay, a five-time PGA Tour winner known for surgical accuracy rather than raw power, spent the season testing low-spin driver heads and lighter graphite shafts to gain ball speed. Golfers regularly search player names paired with technical keywords like "clubhead speed," "swing speed," or "ball speed." When amateur players type casual shorthand such as "Gay speed," search engines occasionally blur the boundary between a 54-year-old professional golfer's launch monitor data and viral internet celebrity queries.
