Fact Check: Is Rey Mysterio Mexican, American, or Dual Citizen?
By Sarah Jenkins
The intergenerational nature of Mexican wrestling demands that knowledge, ring gear, and identity pass down through bloodlines. Óscar Gutiérrez honoured this tradition through his son, Dominik Mysterio, born Dominik Gutiérrez in San Diego, California, in 1997.
Dominik spent his childhood on WWE television, most memorably during the 2005 storyline over his legal custody alongside the late Eddie Guerrero. When Dominik began training to enter the business full-time in the late 2010s, he faced the exact same borderland reality as his father. While born in California, Dominik immersed himself in the Gutiérrez family’s Mexican heritage to learn the craft.
In May 2021, Óscar and Dominik captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, becoming the first father-and-son duo in WWE history to hold tag team gold simultaneously. While Dominik later discarded the mask and turned into one of WWE’s most despised villains, his presence on international programming keeps the Gutiérrez family name at the center of the industry.
