Fact-Check: Is Garth Graham's Chell Artwork Official Valve Media or Fan Tribute?
By James H. Sterling
The saga of Garth Graham's Chell illustration serves as an enduring case study in how digital art loses its pedigree online. A single uncredited upload can alter public record for millions of gamers, transforming an affectionate fan tribute into supposed studio concept art across a decade of automated aggregation.
Crediting Graham for this illustration does not diminish the prestige of Valve's actual design team; instead, it honors both sides of gaming culture. It recognizes the official art department that built Aperture Laboratories into an architectural masterpiece, while celebrating an independent comic illustrator whose affectionate, unauthorized portrait captured the soul of gaming's greatest silent protagonist.
