Fact-Check: Is Gaikwad Obc, Maratha, or Sc? Unpacking the Legal Classification
Indian administrative law does not recognize a unified "Gaikwad community." A revenue officer evaluating a caste application parses the applicant's family tree against distinct state-specific schedules.
The first group includes Marathas of the aristocratic 96 Kuli stock. Historically placed in the Open or General Category, these families qualify for the 10% Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota if their household income falls below 8 lakh rupees per annum, or under Maharashtra's state-level Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) quota created via the 2024 legislative act.
The second cohort encompasses Gaikwads whose ancestors were classified in British-era or post-independence revenue registries as Kunbis. Because the Kunbi community is listed under the central and Maharashtra state OBC quota list, these families hold valid Other Backward Class certificates. That credential unlocks reservation benefits in central civil services, Indian Institutes of Technology admissions, and local municipal elections.
The third group belongs to the Scheduled Caste classification, predominantly drawn from the Mahar community. Following the mass conversion led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at Nagpur in 1956, millions of Mahars embraced Buddhism while retaining their traditional Marathi family names. Under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order of 1950, as amended in 1990 to include Navayana Buddhists, these individuals hold SC status nationwide. For these families, the Gaikwad name represents a legacy of historic struggle against untouchability, completely severed from the feudal power of the Baroda royalty.
