Fact Check: Is Eugene Cordero Filipino? Full Ancestry and Career Breakdown
By Chloe Bennett
Cordero has taken deliberate steps to participate in projects that explicitly celebrate Filipino history and domestic life. In August 2022, Universal Pictures released *Easter Sunday*, a studio comedy directed by Jay Chandrasekhar and starring stand-up comic Jo Koy. The film was historic: it marked the first major American studio film centered entirely around a contemporary Filipino-American family. Cordero co-starred as Eugene, leaning into the specific cultural rhythms of the diaspora, from family karaoke showdowns to the realities of second-generation hustle.
In the summer of 2023, Cordero joined the groundbreaking Broadway production of *Here Lies Love* at the Broadway Theatre. Conceived by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, the disco musical chronicled the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos and the People Power Revolution. More significantly, it featured Broadway's first all-Filipino cast and creative team. Cordero took the stage as the interactive DJ, guiding audience members through the immersive floor space and providing connective tissue between the show's infectious rhythms and its historical gravity.
Participating in *Here Lies Love* was an explicit cultural statement. Cordero used his platform during the Broadway run to emphasize that Filipino stories deserve commercial space on the world's most prestigious stages, independent of token casting structures.
