Fact Check: Did Mappa Change Suguru Geto's Eye Color from the Original Manga?
Geto’s eye design does not exist in an artistic vacuum. To understand why MAPPA and Akutami treat his eye color with such understated restraint, you have to look directly at his narrative foil: Satoru Gojo.
Gojo’s eyes are an ostentatious spectacle. In both the manga’s written descriptions and MAPPA’s compositing suite, Gojo’s Six Eyes are treated as supernatural phenomena. The animators apply layers of glowing cerulean, white ring reflections, and optical bloom to sell their celestial heritage. If Geto possessed an exotic or saturated eye color, that dynamic would fall apart.
Geto’s special grade status comes not from an ocular trait or godly inheritance, but from the grim, nauseating ingestion of cursed spirits. His deep brown-black eyes ground him in human reality. When the two stand side-by-side on the beach in Okinawa during the Hidden Inventory arc, the aesthetic contrast is unmistakable: Gojo reflects the boundless blue sky, while Geto’s eyes absorb light like soil. His dark irises emphasize his emotional isolation as he slowly descends into curse-fueled depression.
