Driven straight into 1/2-inch gypsum drywall without an anchor, a standard nail holds roughly 5 to 10 pounds before crumbly plaster cores yield. Adding an improvised wire loop changes the vector angle. If the hanger sticks out from the frame, it acts as a lever arm. The nail tilts downward, wallowing out the hole in the drywall until the fastener drops free under half its rated static weight.

To prevent wall damage when mounting heavy frames:
- For frames weighing over 20 pounds, fasten at least one point into a timber wall stud using a 2-inch #8 wood screw.
- Select self-drilling zinc drywall anchors: In hollow bays where no stud exists, threaded zinc anchors distribute outward tension across a broader surface of gypsum, rated reliably between 30 and 50 pounds.
- Avoid plastic expansion sleeves in drywall: Conical ribbed plastic sleeves require solid masonry, concrete, or brick to compress against. In hollow gypsum board, they simply pull out cleanly when pulled forward.
- Place silicone or felt bumpers on the bottom back corners of the frame. This keeps the frame parallel to the wall, eliminates vibration against the paint, and ensures weight vectors point straight down rather than tipping outward.
