Zombie spent the late 1990s directing music videos for White Zombie and his solo records, developing a garish collage style built on retro horror nostalgia, go-go dancers, and industrial overdrive. In 2000, Universal Pictures gave him a $7 million production budget to build a physical manifestation of that world. The result was House of 1000 Corpses.

Universal immediately panicked upon viewing the finished cut. Fearing an NC-17 rating and reputational fallout, the studio shelved the film indefinitely. Zombie eventually bought back the negative, shopping it to MGM before Lionsgate acquired the distribution rights. Released in April 2003, the movie grossed over $16 million worldwide against fierce initial reviews.

The film introduced audiences to the murderous Firefly clan and established Sid Haig as the iconic, fried-chicken-eating clown Captain Spaulding. Co-starring Sheri Moon Zombie as Baby Firefly and Bill Moseley as Otis Driftwood, the movie operates like an overstimulated funhouse ride. Acid-tripping cutaways, archival clips, and neon backlighting collide to produce a sensory assault that divided audiences while cementing Zombie as a singular voice.
