Canva's Latest Shape Update: How the New Border Controls Changed Hollow Shapes
A common mistake among intermediate creators is confusing a basic vector outline with a vector circle frame. Both can appear hollow on an empty artboard, but they serve completely different rendering roles.
Frames, found under the dedicated frames subcategory in the elements menu, are masking containers designed to crop raster images into specific silhouettes. While recent updates added basic borders to frames, they do not support transparent interior cutouts if you need to place icons or clean vector typography behind them. A frame expects an image drop. Leaving it empty risks inadvertent image snapping when dragging photos across the layout.
Choose a native shape when the circle functions as a border, an infographic target, a button outline, or an anchor ring for logos. Reserve frames strictly for headshots, thumbnail masking, and imagery containers.
