Campus Modernization: the Evolution of Gsu's Urban Life Building
The relocation of the College of Law to its dedicated Park Place facility in 2015 freed up contiguous floors inside the Urban Life Building. This square footage became the focal point for modernizing the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions. What had once been stacks of legal texts turned into acute-care simulation environments.
Today, the building hosts advanced clinical training suites that mirror the intensive care units of nearby Emory Healthcare and Grady Memorial Hospital. Students practice clinical interventions on programmable mannequins capable of simulating cardiac arrests, pediatric distress, and surgical complications. Sensor-monitored observation stations allow faculty to review vital signs and student actions in real time.
Directly above these training wards, the School of Public Health operates epidemiological modeling centers, environmental health assessment suites, and conference hubs. These research labs require dedicated air handling and negative pressure controls, prompting the installation of rooftop HVAC retrofits that reduced the building's energy consumption by 18% relative to baseline 2010 measures.
