Brutus Buckeye Mascot Death Inquiries: Timeline of Tragic Misconceptions
While fatal incidents never occurred, real physical injuries inside Ohio Stadium gave casual viewers legitimate reasons to worry. College mascot urban legends rarely emerge from complete vacuums; they usually feed on televised accidents where a mascot hit the ground and failed to get back up immediately.
The most infamous incident occurred on September 18, 2010, during a home game against Ohio University. As Brutus took the field, Ohio University's bobcat mascot, Rufus, executed a premeditated blindside attack. The performer inside Rufus, freshman Brandon Hanning, charged full speed across the end zone and tackled Brutus into the turf. Hanning had auditioned for the Bobcat mascot role specifically to tackle Brutus on live television. The stunt resulted in Hanning's immediate dismissal from the Ohio University spirit squad and a permanent ban from athletic events. The student inside Brutus avoided major injury, dusted off the nut shell, and finished the game, but the television footage recirculated for years as evidence of mascot violence.
Sideline mishaps also occur during standard football action. Mascot suits restrict peripheral vision significantly, turning performers into sitting ducks during errant pass plays and sideline collisions. On several occasions, out-of-bounds wide receivers and linebackers have flattened the spirit squad mascot. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, before modern padding was introduced into the costume, performers regularly suffered sprained ankles, fractured fingers, and mild concussions after tumbling over camera carts or player benches.
